There is something satisfying about freshly painted nails.
You choose a color you love, carefully paint each nail, wait for it to dry—and suddenly your hands look completely different. But getting a beautiful manicure isn't only about choosing the right shade.
What you put on your nails, how you prepare them, how you apply the polish, and even how you remove it can all make a difference.
And while you may hear plenty of scary claims about the ingredients in nail polish, the reality is a little more nuanced. Nail products are cosmetics, and many ingredients that sound intimidating are permitted when products are formulated and used appropriately. At the same time, some ingredients can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or other problems for certain people.
So before your next manicure, here are a few things actually worth knowing.
First, What's Really Inside Nail Polish?
Traditional nail polish is essentially a carefully balanced mixture of film-forming ingredients, solvents, resins or plasticizers, pigments and other additives.
Each ingredient has a job.
Film-formers, such as nitrocellulose, create the hard, smooth coating that remains on your nail after the liquid solvents evaporate.
Solvents, including ingredients such as ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, keep the polish liquid enough to spread across the nail. Once exposed to air, these solvents evaporate and the polish begins to dry.
Pigments and colorants provide the shade you see—from soft nude colors to bright reds, deep blues and shimmering metallics.
Other ingredients help the polish adhere properly, remain flexible and resist cracking.
The important point is that an ingredient appearing on a chemical-sounding label does not automatically mean that the finished product is dangerous. The actual concentration, formulation, exposure and method of use matter.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes that some nail-product ingredients can be harmful if misused, but may be considered safe when the products are used as directed.
What About Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP?
You've probably heard of the so-called “toxic trio”: formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP).
These ingredients have historically been associated with nail products, although formulations have changed considerably over the years.
Formaldehyde can be found in some nail hardeners and polishes. According to the FDA, repeated use of formaldehyde-containing nail hardeners can make nails brittle and more likely to break or peel, and formaldehyde can also cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people.
Toluene has been used as a solvent in some nail products. Its use in nail products has declined, and the Cosmetic Ingredient Review has previously concluded that it was safe at concentrations used in nail products under its assessed conditions.
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was historically used as a plasticizer to help prevent polish from becoming brittle. FDA surveys have found that DBP use in cosmetics has declined substantially, and it was found in only a small number of nail polishes in the agency's 2010 survey.
So rather than assuming every conventional nail polish is hazardous, a better approach is simple:
Read the ingredient label, choose products from reputable manufacturers, and use them according to the directions.
Should You Look for “5-Free” or “10-Free” Polish?
You may have noticed labels such as 5-Free, 7-Free, 10-Free or 12-Free on nail polish bottles.
These are marketing terms used by brands to indicate that certain ingredients have been intentionally excluded from their formulas. However, the exact list of excluded ingredients can vary between brands.
For example, a “5-Free” formula commonly excludes formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin and camphor.
A higher “free” number may exclude additional ingredients.
If avoiding particular ingredients is important to you, don't rely only on the number printed on the bottle. Check the actual ingredient list.
That's especially useful if you've previously experienced irritation or an allergic reaction to a nail product.
Ventilation Matters More Than You Might Think

Open a window or make sure the room is well ventilated.
Nail polish and removers contain volatile chemicals, and the smell can become overwhelming in a small, poorly ventilated room.

This is particularly important for people who regularly work with nail products, such as nail technicians, because their exposure can be much greater than that of someone who paints their nails occasionally.
Don't Ignore Your Cuticles
Your cuticles aren't just annoying little pieces of skin around your nails.
They help protect the area where the nail begins to grow.
Dermatologists generally recommend avoiding cutting the cuticles, because damaging this protective barrier can make it easier for bacteria and other germs to enter and cause infection.
If you push them back, do so gently rather than aggressively cutting or forcing them.
And if your nails or surrounding skin are already irritated, cracked or infected, giving them a break from cosmetic products may be the wiser choice.
Preparing Your Nails Before Polish
A beautiful manicure starts before the first drop of color touches your nail.
Start by removing any old polish and gently cleaning your hands and nails.
Shape the nails with a file rather than aggressively sawing back and forth. Dermatologists recommend filing in one direction because repeated back-and-forth filing can weaken the nails.
You also don't need to spend a long time soaking your nails before every manicure. If you need to soften them, a short period in lukewarm water can help.

You've probably seen advice suggesting that cold water instantly dries nail polish.

Five Things That Can Go Wrong
A manicure isn't usually a problem when done carefully, but there are a few things worth watching for.
1. Skin irritation or allergy
Some people can develop irritation or allergic reactions to ingredients in nail products. If you notice persistent redness, swelling, itching or discomfort, stop using the product and consider speaking with a healthcare professional.
2. Brittle or peeling nails
Frequent exposure to polish removers or certain nail hardeners can leave nails dry and fragile.
3. Nail staining
Dark or strongly pigmented colors can sometimes leave temporary discoloration. A base coat can help reduce this.
4. Infection
Cutting or damaging the cuticle can compromise the protective barrier around the nail and increase the risk of infection.
5. Poor ventilation
Using nail polish or remover in a small, closed room can increase exposure to vapors. Good ventilation is a simple precaution recommended by the FDA.
And One More Important Thing: Check Your Nails
Sometimes the biggest warning sign isn't the polish.
It's the nail underneath it.
If you notice a new or changing dark streak, significant changes in nail shape or texture, persistent lifting, unusual discoloration, or other unexplained changes, don't simply cover it with another layer of polish.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that some nail changes can be signs of infection or other medical conditions and recommends having concerning changes evaluated by a dermatologist.
A Beautiful Manicure Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
You don't need a professional salon every time you want beautiful nails.
Clean nails, gentle preparation, thin coats, adequate drying time, good ventilation and regular moisturizing can take you surprisingly far.
And perhaps the biggest lesson is this:
Don't be frightened by every chemical name you see on a nail-polish bottle—but don't ignore safety either.
Read the label. Follow the instructions. Give your nails a break when they need one. Keep your tools clean, avoid damaging your cuticles, and pay attention to any unusual reaction.
Because the best manicure isn't simply the one that looks beautiful when you leave the house.
